Jim Corbett National park came into being in 1936 as Hailey National Park, named after Sir Malcolm Hailey, the then Governor of the United Provinces. Later it was renamed in 1957 after the famous hunter-turned-conservationist Jim Corbett, who played a crucial role in its establishment. Sprawled in an area of 520 square kilometres, well known for its diversified flora and fauna.


Prevalent wildlife- Bengal tiger, Indian elephant, Leopard, Indian wild boar, chital, Sambar deer, Goral, Sambar deer etc.



Jim Corbett National Park- Dedicated to the protection and preservation of the unique flora and fauna.



The Jim Corbett National park is divided into 6 Zones, Namely-

  • Bijrani Zone
  • Jhirna Zone
  • Dhela Zone
  • Durga Devi Zone
  • Dhikala Zone
  • Sonanadi Zone

Bijrani Zone-

  • A popular tourist destination known for its expansive grasslands, dense forests and riverbeds. Located in the Northern part of Corbett National park.
  • Wildlife- Bengal tigers, elephants, leopards, deer, wild boars, and a variety of bird species are spotted easily.
  • Activities- Jeep safari and bird watching activities are famous among tourists..
  • Ideal time to visit- From mid-October to mid-June.

Jhirna Zone-

  • Situated on the southern part of Corbett National park featuring a mix of beautiful landscapes, river beds and forests.
    • Wildlife- Animals such as sloth bears, leopards, tigers, as well as elephants and deer, are commonly sighted.
    • Activities- It is a paradise for bird watchers, consisting of a variety of bird species, such as peacocks, vultures, kingfishers, and other regional and migratory birds.
    • Ideal time to visit- Open throughout the year but for wildlife sightings the best time is from November to June.

    Dhela Zone-

    This zone is famous for the high tiger sightings. It covers an area of over 1173 hectares. It is the sixth eco-tourism zone famous for its rich biodiversity, including mixed forests, grasslands, and water bodies.

    • Wildlife-Tigers, Asiatic elephants, leopards, sloth bears and king Cobras.
    • Activities- Jeep safaris, bird watching, and sightings of tigers, elephants, leopards, and many bird species.
    • Ideal time to visit- Open throughout the year but for wildlife sightings the best time is from October to mid June.

    Durga devi Zone-

    Situated in the northeastern part of Corbett national park. This zone is famous for its magnificent beauty and diverse species of wild animals. It is also home to several endangered animals.

    • Flora- Sheesham, Sheesam, Dhak, Khair,Chir Pine, Banj Oak, Kanju, Jamun and Amla.
    • Fauna- Common species found in this zone are the Royal Bengal Tiger, Wild Boar, Wild Asian Elephant, various species of Deer like Spotted Deer, Sambar Deer, Barking Deer, Chital, Rhesus Monkey, Black Faced Monkey, Jackal, etc.
    • Ideal time to visit- From mid-October to mid-June.

    Dhikala Zone-

    It is the largest and the most picturesque zone located in the heart of Jim corbett.The Ramganga river flows alongside the zone providing mesmerising views of the wildlife in raw form.

    • Wildlife- Main attractions are the Royal bengal tiger and asiatic elephants. Other animals including leopards, elephants, hog deer, sambar deer and wild boar can also be spotted in this area.
    • Activities- Tourists can enjoy a variety of safari options like- Jeep, safari, canter safari and elephant safari.
    • Ideal time to visit- From November to June.

    Sonanadi zone--

    The Sonanadi Zone in Jim Corbett National Park takes its name from its past as a gold mining place; the term literally translates to "A river of gold." The Sonanadi Zone, which had previously been a part of the Kalagarh Forest Division, was included in the national park in 1991.

    • Flora- Sal forests, rohini,sheesham, haldu, jamun etc.
    • Fauna- Asiatic elephants, tigers, cheetahs, sambhars, leopards, and various reptile species.
    • Ideal time to visit- In winters from October to February and in summers from March to June.
